  • Full name: Chain Combo

  • Nickname: Match

  • Species: Catperson

  • Occupation: Prosecuting attorney

  • Other interests: playing puzzle games competitively, playing fighting games competitively, martial arts

  • Hair color: Red

  • Eye color: Red

  • Height: 5'2"*

  • Bra size: 32C* (US)

A prosecutor by day, her sometimes-blunt-sometimes-theatrical style brings unnecessary drama to the courtroom, though she is extremely effective. She is criticized by other prosecutors for being excessively tough on law enforcement officials (as defendants) but "too" forgiving towards citizens convicted of nonviolent crimes.

She is very skilled at puzzle games (favorite series: Puyo Puyo) and fighting games (favorite series: King of Fighters) and has won local tournaments for a wide variety of games.
Most of her favorite characters live far away, though she hopes to someday at least meet Terry Bogard or Ken Masters.
Inspired by her favorite games, she has become a skilled fighter, and while she hasn't quite mastered the technique like they have, she is able to use Stun.

Her name comes from the terms "chain" and "combo" which are used in both puzzle games (Tetris, Puyo Puyo) and fighting games (Street Fighter, King of Fighters). Her nickname comes from "match" which can also loosely apply to both, in addition to forming a pun on "mismatch" when taken with MISS' name.

She is quick-tempered and blunt but not malicious. She is well aware of the flaws in the justice system and seeks to help people from the inside, holding herself and her colleagues accountable along the way.
She has known MISS since high school and attended law school with Gary.
She thinks pineapple on pizza is disgusting but will defend the right of others to eat it.

She is Hispanic and speaks with a slight accent.

  • Name: MISS

  • Species: Catperson

  • Occupation: Temp and odd-job worker

  • Favorite song: "Dare to be Stupid" by "Weird" Al Yankovic

  • Hair color: Pink

  • Eye color: Pinkish-purple

  • Height: 5'8"*

  • Bra size: 34F* (US)

A cynic might dismiss her as an excitable (and slightly annoying) simpleton. This is in fact her goal.

Not too many years ago, having become jaded and unhappy, MISS decided that "ignorance is bliss," and reinventing herself as a stupider person would make her happier or more optimistic. She still works at becoming the "ultimate bimbo."
MISS appears clumsy and unobservant, but she ensures that her antics never cause any harm.

She is the only catgirl, and non-Flat person in general, working for GW Staffing. Her false clumsiness can make a worrying scene on the job, but ultimately she gets her work done as efficiently as anyone else.

Her name comes from the term used in Game & Watch games to count the player's mistakes. The colors of her shoes, socks, and hoodie(s) are based on the plastic and metal casings of those games. Her skirt is black to match the graphics.
She has a few similar-looking hoodies with some differences. She wears a sweatshirt-style one and one with a zipper interchangeably.
While on job sites, per Gary's request, she wears all-black or dark clothing to make herself easier to identify as a worker with the company.

For work purposes, she has a flat black bell-like object and a necklace with a flat bell-shaped pendant.
The bell gives its holder the physical properties of a Flat person**, allowing them to work with Flat objects.
The necklace allows her to use the bell without changing her outward appearance.

She greatly enjoys sweets and desserts, especially cheesecake.

Match has been her best friend since high school.

  • Name: Gary Watson

  • Species: LCD

  • Occupation: General manager of GW Staffing

  • Other interests: Law, Smash Bros. (becoming a participant)

  • Most common appearance: Generally around 5' tall and appears to have a fedora, tie, and suspenders.

Gary is a practical Flat man who is satisfied with what he's done for others but wishes he'd had more luck with his personal aspirations.
He attended law school with Match and intended to practice as a defense lawyer, but he ended up taking over part of GW Staffing.
He does enjoy his current occupation and sees GWS as a place where Flat people down on their luck can pick up work and get good experience.
At work, (and in general,) he tends to be quite matter-of-fact and doesn't tolerate excessive tomfoolery.

Like Match, Gary enjoys fighting, in his own way. He tried out for Mr. Game & Watch 2018, taking a runner-up trophy but not winning the title. He has kept the fighting skill he acquired but doesn't find much opportunity to use it.

His name, of course, is meant to evoke the beginnings of the words "Game" and "Watch."

Several Flat people.

In this universe, people like Gary, Flat people, are a separate species from humans.
Essentially, this is the species that all Game & Watch characters belong to.

Physical details:

  • They cannot be directly touched, or directly touch anything, but a physical "influence" can be felt up close. Their physics are very ambiguous and they can interact with objects by being reasonably close to them.

  • Much like Inklings' ink composition, LCD people are made of a jet black liquid which can quickly change shape and properties.

  • They are by nature asexual and lack gender, but most individuals will choose a gender to live by to fit in better with humans.

  • Because they can easily change appearance, a Flat person's physical characteristics like height are often not useful to record.

  • They are impervious to most physical and even non-physical attacks, with only 2 weaknesses: electricity, which can stun, and extremely high temperatures, which will boil the liquid they are composed of. The effect is not unlike the Dip from Roger Rabbit.

Cultural details:

  • They have their own language, but most speak English (or another human language) with an accent described as monotone and staticky.

  • They appear to live with harmony with humans, but discrimination in employment, housing, etc. is still a problem. Fortunately, it has gotten better in recent years.

  • Every few years, the community holds a competition called "Mr. Game & Watch," where Flat competitors fight to decide who will represent them (with the winner having earned the title of "Mr. Game & Watch") in the next Super Smash Bros. game.

  • Most, or at least many, Game & Watch games are (by this canon) based on real incidents and jobs handled by GW Staffing.

These characters and the comics featuring them take place in a crossover-oriented universe in which a great deal of media are simultaneously canon, with minor alterations for the sake of cohesiveness.

Most media still exist, but are here fictionalizations of real events.
(However, media that only exist within media [i.e. Show Within a Show] exist as original works.)
(The film Rasputin and the Express was never made, resulting in looser restrictions on these fictionalizations.)
Specific examples:

  • Splatoon 1 and 2 still take place after the decline of civilization, but some limited travel between the 2 time periods is possible.

  • The events of Danganronpa 1 and 2 are mostly canon; however the events at Hope's Peak did not throw the world into chaos as some claimed.

  • Pokémon exist only in certain regions of the world. These regions rely heavily on tourism due to the worldwide interest in Pokémon.

  • Quirks exist, but are extremely rare outside of Japan.

  • Stands are more evenly distributed throughout the world, but are still rare.

  • The events of Mother 1+2 are canon, although "Eagleland" is just a nickname for the southwest US. The effects of Giygas' invasion were limited to Eagleland and the surrounding area, thanks to the efforts of Ninten, Ness, and their friends.

  • Vocal androids, or "Vocaloids," are a set of androids produced to act as robotic singing, dancing idols. Their concert performances are preprogrammed, but they do possess AI to help with other public appearances. Hatsune Miku is by far the most popular of them.

Also: many non-human but human-adjacent species exist, necessitating "humanoids," "mammals," and "people" to be used as common inclusive terms depending on what broad group is being spoken of.

On the integration of fighting games specifically:

When a fighting game is created, adding each character necessitates an interview and motion-capture process with the original fighter. Most agree, but for dead or difficult-to-reach people such as Geese Howard and M. Bison, movesets are often made up or based on witness descriptions.

There is an interesting exception in Super Smash Bros.: Mr. Game & Watch, a nonexistent person who nevertheless always receives an invite, necessitating the Mr. Game & Watch competition held during the development of each new game in the series.

A very small percentage of people, including Chain Combo and most famous martial artists portrayed in these games, are able to learn and use a technique called "Stun." Opponents attacked using Stun won't be knocked very far back regardless of attack force, but will be stunned briefly (only a fraction of a second), allowing for multiple attacks to be performed in sequence. It's very difficult to learn, but rewarding.
